Summer program helps newcomers in Winnipeg get ready for Canadian school

On average, 2,000 newcomers enrol with NEEDS Inc. every year for educational, employment programs. 

The Winnipeg non-profit organization supports newcomer immigrant and refugee youth through a range of employment, education and recreation programs, including the introduction to Canadian education program — a free school-preparedness course for newly arrived youth ages six to 21.

A Winnipeg organization that helps young people and their families settle in Canada is busier than ever. Newcomers Employment and Education Development Services, or NEEDS, says in a typical year they work with some 22,000 clients. But in the first six months of this fiscal year, that number is already at roughly 27,000.

It’s a Tuesday morning, and 13 students aged 14 to 17 are gathered in a classroom on Notre Dame Avenue in Winnipeg.

They come from Ukraine, Afghanistan and Syria.
